Leica Store Basel
May 30 – September 23, 2024
At the Leica Store Basel, visitors were welcomed until 23 September 2024 to an exhibition capturing the echo of music in striking visual form. Where the vibrant colours of Thomas Dürr meet the timeless photography of Tobias Sutter, music becomes a spectacle for the eyes. Born from an environment in which creative energy resonates as powerfully as the bass of a rock concert, this project transcends conventional boundaries. It dissolves the lines between photography and painting, between concert hall and art gallery. The works present compelling portraits, faces that tell stories of stage lights, guitar riffs, and unforgettable nights. Amid these iconic figures of the music world, one face appears repeatedly: a man whose distinctive curly hair and warm smile are nearly as recognisable as the stars themselves. This man is Thomas Dürr, the creative force behind the project, an artist who brings music legends not only onto the stage, but also onto the canvas. What happens when this visionary creator joins forces with another master of his craft, an artist who captures moments through his Leica camera with such timeless clarity and expressive power that even the loudest sounds seem to fall silent? The result is an art project unlike any other. Black-and-white photography is brought to life through explosive colour, portraying the music scene with an intensity that can be felt without hearing a single note. Thomas Dürr, the painter, and Tobias Sutter, the master behind the lens, present a world in which music is not only heard, but seen. How did this unique collaboration come into being? As so often in life, it began on one of those memorable evenings when ideas take shape over a glass of wine, ideas as vivid as the dawn itself. Without the unexpected pause imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, these concepts might never have materialised. Yet circumstances unfolded differently, and from them emerged artworks that capture not only the hearts of those portrayed, but also those of the viewers. These images, indeed, these works of art, are far more than photographs. They stand as testimony to a friendship shaped by a shared passion for music and art.
